Every October 17, the world commemorates the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a day to raise awareness of the fight against poverty and promote human dignity. This date has its roots in an event that took place in 1987, when more than 100,000 people gathered at the Place du Trocadéro in Paris to pay tribute to the victims of poverty, violence and hunger.

In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed this day, marking the beginning of an international agenda committed to the eradication of poverty. Since then, governments around the world have been invited to organize activities and policies to combat destitution, reaffirming the need for a collective effort to ensure that all people can live in dignity.

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is not just a day of reflection, but a call to action. Eradicating poverty is not only an economic issue, but a struggle for human rights and social justice. Poverty, in all its dimensions, must be understood and addressed in a holistic manner, recognizing how different forms of violence and domination interact with each other.

On this October 17, it is essential to renew our commitment to the eradication of poverty, recognizing the dignity of all people and fighting for social justice that includes the most vulnerable.

President Javier Milei's administration has a strong commitment to poverty eradication. In his speech on September 29th in Parque Lezama, the President stated: “Poverty is not generated from one day to the next, neither can it be eliminated from one day to the next; and although they left us 45% of poverty and if all the bombs they left us had exploded, poverty would have reached 95% and 50% of the indigent, in the first quarter, in spite of having avoided the crisis and channeled the macroeconomic situation, poverty grew to 55%. But I would like to tell something to all these impoverishing hypocritical sappy people: poverty in the second quarter of the year was 51%; therefore, poverty has started to fall in Argentina”.
