Every October 1st, the Sea and Fishing Wealth Day is commemorated, an initiative promoted by the Argentine Naval League, since 1937, which aims to highlight the importance of maritime resources in the economic and social development of Argentina, to value the strategic role that the seas and fisheries play not only in the economy, but also in food security and national sovereignty.

The Argentine Naval League, promoter of this date, is a civil, public and non-profit association established on 10 May 1933. It is an entity with a long history in the defence of national maritime interests, and has worked since its creation to raise awareness of the importance of the oceans.

Most of our planet is covered by oceans and our country, in particular, has a coastline of more than 5,000 kilometres - from the mouth of the Río de la Plata to the south of Tierra del Fuego - and a sea of more than 2,800,000 km2, to which we can add the surface of the continental shelf - which would bring the total to 4,200,000 km2 - while the national maritime component is one of the most productive in the world. Fishing is one of the country's main economic activities, generating employment and exports that contribute significantly to regional development, especially in the coastal provinces.

The Sea and Fishing Wealth Day not only celebrates the contribution of the seas to the country's economy and culture, but is also an invitation to reflect on the need to conserve and sustainably manage our sea, a source of resources and opportunities for all Argentines.
