The 15th of September is commemorated in our country the creation of the 1st Patricios Infantry Regiment, a military unit that since its foundation in 1806 has accompanied the most decisive moments of our history.
Its origin dates back to the British invasions, when under the call of Santiago de Liniers y Bremond, citizens of Buenos Aires took up arms to defend the city. Thus was born the Legion of Urban Volunteer Patricians, which consolidated itself as the first organised military force before the existence of the Argentine nation itself.
The Patricios' baptism of fire was on 5 July 1807, when in defence of Buenos Aires they achieved a historic victory over Whitelocke's British troops. Since then, this regiment has earned a place of honour in the national memory.
Their commitment to the defence of sovereignty and freedom was palpable during the days of the May Revolution of 1810, where, under the leadership of Cornelio Saavedra, they contributed decisively to the constitution of the First Patriotic Government.
Over the years, the Regiment of Patricios has been present at key moments in our history: from the campaigns for independence in Upper Peru and the Banda Oriental, to the creation and defence of the National Flag in 1812. They also participated in the War against the Empire of Brazil and in the Desert campaigns, leaving a legacy of bravery and sacrifice.
In more recent times, its participation in the Malvinas War in 1982 and in the recovery of the barracks during the events of La Tablada in 1989 reaffirmed its role as custodian of sovereignty and constitutional order.
Currently, the main mission of the 1st Patrician Infantry Regiment is to provide escort to the Chief of General Staff of the Army. On the other hand, as an operational mission, it is in charge of security in the barracks themselves, security of the Army General Staff and the Ministry of Defence, and it also has the mission of participating in the recovery of military installations in urban areas. The unit is also exclusively responsible for the guard of honour at the Cabildo.
Today, 218 years after its creation, we salute the entire 1st Patrician Infantry Regiment and pay tribute to all those who were part of this heroic unit, who with their dedication and courage forged the path to freedom and independence for our country.
