Teachers' Day is celebrated on 11 September in commemoration of the death in 1888 of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, one of the most influential figures in Argentine history. Writer, journalist, politician, military man and teacher, Sarmiento dedicated his life to the development of education and culture as fundamental tools for the progress of the nation. On each anniversary of his death, his tireless struggle for literacy and his vision of a modern and civilised country are remembered.

Sarmiento was president of the Argentine Republic between 1868 and 1874, and during his term of office he promoted policies that prioritised education, science and technologies applied to development. With a deep liberal conviction, Sarmiento distinguished himself for his perseverance and determination to promote scientific progress and citizen education, understanding that the nation's progress could not be achieved without these pillars.

Among his most outstanding achievements were the creation of numerous primary schools and the promotion of teacher training. His literary and intellectual work left a profound impact, especially his famous book 'Facundo: Civilización y Barbarie' (1845), where he expressed his ideas on the development of Latin America.

Sarmiento died at the age of 77 in Asunción, Paraguay. Today, more than a century after his departure, Sarmiento's legacy is still present. Teacher's Day is celebrated in Argentina on the date of his death as a tribute to his tireless work for education. In every corner of the country, his vision of a fairer and more prosperous Argentina through knowledge is still alive, reminding us that education is the fundamental basis for the development of societies.

In the Casa Rosada Museum there is a collection of objects that belonged to the former president and, in the gallery of the presidential busts, there is the one of Sarmiento, made by the Italian sculptor Ximenez Ettore in 1897.

Sarmiento, the Father of the Classroom, with his thought and action, stands as a beacon in Argentine history, a symbol of cultural and social transformation that still inspires generations of educators and citizens.
