Today marks another anniversary of the creation of the Argentine National Gendarmerie, established in 1938 by the National Congress, during the presidency of Roberto Marcelino Ortiz.
This institution emerged in response to the need for a specialised and highly trained force to address specific security challenges, guaranteeing the territorial integrity and internal order of the country.
Among its objectives, the Gendarmería Nacional Argentina (GNA) is in charge of protecting the borders and is responsible for maintaining order and public security in rural areas and border zones, where the presence of other security forces may be limited.
Since its creation, the Gendarmería has played a crucial role in the fight against smuggling, drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime that threaten the security and well-being of the nation. In addition, it is responsible for providing support in emergency situations, such as during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, and natural disasters, providing humanitarian assistance and assisting in rescue and relief efforts.
The GNA also participates in peace missions and international cooperation, contributing to global security and strengthening ties with other nations.
According to Law Nº 24.059, the Gendarmerie together with the Argentine Naval Prefecture make up the Internal Security System. They are also part of the National Defence System according to Law Nº 23.554.
At present, the GNA together with the Argentine Naval Prefecture, the Federal Penitentiary Service, the Argentine Federal Police and the Federal Airport Police are part of the Federal Forces, under the National Ministry of Security.
Over the years, the Gendarmerie has been recognised for its commitment to the homeland and its dedication to public service, positioning itself as an institution of great prestige and respect in Argentine society. In addition, it highlights the importance of training, capacity building and constant modernisation of this institution to face current and future security challenges.
86 years after its creation, we celebrate and honour the tireless work of the gendarmes, remembering their bravery, courage and dedication to the service of the nation.
