35 years after Carlos Saúl Menem's electoral victory in 1989, President Javier Milei led the ceremony of placing the bust of the former president in the Hall of Honour, also known as the ‘Gallery of Presidential Busts’, a space in the Casa Rosada where homage is paid to the former constitutional presidents who governed Argentina.

On 14 May 1989, Carlos Menem became President of Argentina after defeating the candidate of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), Eduardo Angeloz, with 49.3% of the electorate. His term of office, which lasted until December 1999, was notable for lasting 10 years, five months and two days, making him the longest serving president.

During his term, Menem implemented significant economic policies such as the Convertibility Plan, a fundamental measure to stabilise the economy and combat the hyperinflation that had gripped the country for years.

In addition, the former president promoted the privatisation of numerous state-owned companies, opening the door to foreign investment and encouraging competition in key sectors of the economy.

Menem began his political career in La Rioja, his home province, where he became governor in 1973, a position he held until 1976, when he was removed from office during the military dictatorship. After the return to democracy in 1983, he was again elected to lead the province.

In 1993, he signed the historic Olivos Pact with the UCR, led by former President Raúl Alfonsín, laying the groundwork for the 1994 constitutional reform. This reform allowed for consecutive re-election and made it possible for Menem to be re-elected in 1995.

Subsequently, Menem remained active in politics within the Partido Justicialista (PJ) as senator for La Rioja from 2005 to 2021.

He died on 14 February 2021, at the age of 90. The funeral was held in the Blue Room of the National Congress, remembering his legacy and contributions to the country's history.
